If you’ve ever touched a hot stove and never did it again, you already understand operant conditioning. It’s the psychology of consequence, and it’s how every creature on this earth—your dog included—learns what to do, what to avoid, and what’s worth repeating.

At its core, operant conditioning is simple:
Behaviour is shaped by its consequences.

This idea, made famous by psychologist B.F. Skinner, gave us the four quadrants of operant learning:

  • Positive Reinforcement: Adding something the dog wants to increase behaviour (e.g., treat after a sit)

  • Negative Reinforcement: Removing something the dog finds unpleasant to increase behaviour (e.g., leash pressure is released when the dog stops pulling)

  • Positive Punishment: Adding something the dog finds unpleasant to decrease behaviour (e.g., a leash pop when the dog lunges, or a verbal ‘no’ for jumping)

  • Negative Punishment: Taking away something the dog wants to decrease behaviour (e.g., removing attention when the dog jumps)

All four of these are tools in the hands of a thoughtful trainer—not weapons. The goal isn’t to punish a dog into submission or bribe them into obedience. The goal is clarity. Communication. Cause and effect.
